My new office has a makeup mirror

I start my new job tomorrow at KGUN 9.

I get my own office.  It has a makeup mirror with lights.

I have no excuse for not having perfect hair since I can check it throughout the day.

Mirror mirror on the wall...

Time to play dress up

I have invested some serious time in the last 48 hours doing something I haven't done in quite a while:  Buy clothes.

A flashback -- before I got into radio, I sold suits at May D&F department store in Denver, Colorado.  It was 1986 and I had a closet full of suits at the age of 19.  I wore one to work every day.  Then, I got into the radio business.  A vast majority of people who are radio dj's are casual dressers.  If I wore a suit every day it would have looked like I wanted to work in the sales department.  So, I dressed casually.  The only time I wore a suit was at a rare event that required it or for a job interview.

It never seemed to be needed to dress up most of the time.  Even in radio at events where I'd interact with clients I'd usually be wearing something with the station logo and it didn't seem like I needed to get fancy with what I was wearing.  If you're standing in 100 degree heat at a car dealership wearing a dress shirt, slacks and dress shoes it almost seems ridiculous.  On the rare occasions I did dress up everyone around me was shocked that I owned dress shoes and dress shirts.

I moved into television in October and asked what the appropriate attire is for being a news producer.  I was told what I was wearing was fine... if I wanted to wear shorts, do it on the weekend.  More casual attire.

Now I'm going to be an executive producer.  It was time to buy some new dress shirts, multiple pairs of slacks, new dress shoes.  I should look the exective part!

I'm looking forward to starting my new job on Monday and looking spiffy.

Its like I never left (almost)

I had a unique experience yesterday.

I had a meeting at Journal.  Its the place I worked at before Fox 11 and where I'll be working again starting Monday.

I think the story is extraordinary.  I had worked at Journal Tucson until October 5 of last year on 106.3 when I, along with the other members of the on-air staff, were let go.  Three weeks later I got a job working for Belo at Fox 11 as a news producer.  A few weeks after that Belo announces they were entering into a shared services agreement with Raycom that would cause my employment (and many others) to end there on January 31.  I searched for jobs and end up getting an offer from Journal.  Four months and one day later I'll be returning to work with a group I'm very familiar with.

This time I'll be working on the television side on KGUN 9 instead of radio.  And, I'll have an office instead of a cubicle.  I got the keys to it when I was there yesterday.  I am really excited to get started.

It was a lot of fun taking an hour to walk around the building saying hello to everyone I used to work with -- and will work with again.  I thought since I wasn't really working it was a good time to do it.  There were lots of hugs, handshakes, and really nice things said.  It was overwhelming, wonderful, and a unique experience.

There is an important life lesson I want to share with you that I'm reminded of as a result of what has transpired:  Do not burn bridges no matter how you may feel when something happens.

None of us really know where our next opportunity may lie.  I'm living proof.

Happy Groundhog Day

Happy Groundhog Day.

Can't figure out why schools, government offices, and banks are not closed today in commemoration. The people of our nation need to have more respect for the mighty rodent who focuses all of its energy to determine whether we have an early spring or a long winter.

At least not all is lost... we got a Bill Murray movie out of it.
