Buy fabulous used stuff from Ken Carr

I have a few items I no longer have a need for.  If you've always dreamed of owning something that once was used / owned by a craptastic local celebrity here's your chance!  E-mail me at ken@gotken if you are interested.

Here's what I currently have for sale:

15 inch color TV.

Works fine, needs remote (a universal remote does work with it).

$5 bucks!

I also have for sale:  A two phone Panasonic cordless phone system for $20.

Movin on up to the east side

I have decided to move out of my apartment near the Tucson Mall.  I've moving from the west side to the east side.  I keep running the Jefferson's TV show theme in my head (Movin' on up, to the east side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky...).

Anthony and I are moving in together.  The apartment search wasn't too bad.  A couple weekends and we found an awesome place only two miles from the radio/TV building.  I have driven it twice to check and its a six minute commute.  It sure beats the nearly 30 minute commute I have each way now.

The apartment is really cool.  Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, fireplace, patio outside the front door and another balcony outside one of the bedrooms.  It has a big kitchen, separate dining room, breakfast bar, washer/dryer, and a hot tub at the bottom of the stairs (its on the second floor).  1055 square feet.  Lots of storage too.

Oddly enough I'll miss the apartment I'm living in now in a few ways.  I've been here more than 3 1/2 years.  I like the neighborhood (I've lived in this general area for about eight years).  I haven't tried living on Tucson's east side before so maybe I'll like it as well.  I do find it kind of funny that the new apartment is four blocks from a Hooter's.

We're signing the lease and picking up the keys on Thursday.  I'll get photos up when I get them taken.  In the meantime, I need some more boxes because I have lots of packing to do.

Another neighbor story

It hasn't mattered where I live.  There is always a story about a neighbor.

The apartment right next door to me has a woman, what I am guessing is her boyfriend (he isn't there all the time so its a guess), two teenage kids, and a little boy who's probably about four.

I've made jokes on Twitter and Facebook about how she seems kind of out of it.  I don't really know since I haven't spoken to her at all.  They all seem like nice people but there has been something out of the ordinary about that crew.

The teenage boys are home a lot even while school is going on which makes me think they don't go for some reason.  I try not to be the Gladys Kravitz type neighbor but I've wondered.

Tonight I am working on my laptop scheduling music logs in my living room.  I heard a knocking on the neighbor's door.  That's not totally uncommon at this hour for them (they have people knocking there it seems almost around the clock) but I got curious who was visiting so I looked through the peephole.

It turned out it was a security guard for the apartment complex.  He kept banging and finally the woman's boyfriend answered.  He explained that he was looking for the woman (best I could hear through the door... ok, maybe I am Gladys Kravitz... and if you've never seen the classic TV show "Bewitched" you won't get that reference).  She finally came to the door and the guard said that one of her teenage sons had been caught on the other side of the complex breaking into a car.

The only other part I could hear was something about him being on probation and then she got a jacket and they all walked away from the door toward the parking lot.

Moment later I heard a reference to the complex address on the police scanner.

My curiosity got the best of me.  I threw on a jacket and went to get the mail.  Perfectly legitimate excuse to walk over to the other side of the complex I figured.

Sure enough, police cruiser over there with one of the kids detained in the back.  That's too bad.  From what I can tell they seem like nice kids.

The best part?  Interesting neighbors make good stories.

Electronic blast from the past

I've ended up (that's the best way to describe it) with two older video cameras that I had decided I was going to sell.

One of them was given to me at work.  They were going to throw it out and was told to take it or it was going into the trash.  The other one was from a former roommate who didn't want it anymore.

I'm short of cash (what's new?) so I thought I'd look into selling them.  You can now cue the "Mission Impossible" theme.

Electronic items are one of the few things that are expensive to buy and end up being worth a fraction of their original value not long after.

I understand now why I ended up with them.  They are both JVC VHS-C camcorders.  One of them shows a manufacture date of 1994 on the bottom.  That's 16 years ago!

Its amazing how far camera technology has advanced in that period of time.  They don't have flip out screens, they used rather large tapes (basically smaller VHS tapes), the viewfinders are flip out pieces that you look through a hole and the picture is in black and white.  They tape in color and the cameras themselves have words like "digital" on the side but what we now consider digital is not what they did at the time.

The camera I got from work did have a tape in it.  It was a video of kids performing on stage at a Mix-FM Baby Fair from years ago at some point.  There was also a couple minutes of some sort of parking lot carnival.

I looked up the model numbers on Google and found one that was on sale on e-bay.  The starting price was $4.99 and it had no bids.  I'll bet they both cost close to a thousand dollars when they were new.

Having them in my possession is an odd blast from the past.  Unfortunately I think I'm going to end up tossing them in the dumpster unless I can find someone to give them to who wants them.  Maybe someone will want to hold on to them for 20 years and they'll be suitable for donating to a museum.

Anyone need a couple of paperweights?

Kenparazzi: Cosmic Bingo on Oct 9 2010

Anthony and I went to play Cosmic Bingo on Saturday October 9 at Casino Del Sol.

We sat with our friends Rick, Shawn, Daniel, and across from Chuck George from KOLD TV.

First I had to feel for host Lucinda Holliday who had spent all day at Reid Park for Pride in the Park and was pretty darned pooped.

Daniel got a chance to roll the big ass dice and rolled a winning seven.

Chuck won the coverall bingo game that got him into the money machine and scored nearly $500 bucks.  He asked me for some tips and the advice I gave him was helpful because he did pretty well.

Here's the counting of his dough.

My advice wasn't quite good enough I realized afterward because he didn't tip me.  Oh well.

Kenparazzi: Leaking pipe in the Journal sales area

A pipe started leaking today at work in the ceiling of the sales area.  It is apparently a pipe that is related to the drainage of one of the air conditioning units.

Office pipe breaks amuse me.

Kenparazzi: KGUN 9 photojournalist on the roof

I started my airshift on Mega 106.3 today at 3 p.m. and minutes later got a dust storm warning for the Tucson metro area.

I looked out my studio window and KGUN 9 photojournalist Chris Miracle (left) was out on the roof in the gusty wind, dust and rain along with KGUN 9's Andrew (right).
